Spring 2017

The Trendsetters are back at it again with another Steal Their Style post! This time around, we’re diving into our TV (or laptops/mobile devices) screens and taking inspiration from our biggest style icons on television.

Netflix: all day, everyday. I mean, we’ve all been there. While I’m sitting there pizza in hand, engulfed in a series, not only am I putting off homework and my problems IRL, I’m usually getting a ton of fashion inspo while I’m at it. And that’s all that matters, right? Okay, maybe not, but I can say that I do get a lot of outfit inspiration from the characters on the TV shows I watch and one of those shows happens to be PLL aka Pretty Little Liars. While every character featured on PLL has an admirable sense of style, I find myself drawn to one particular character’s again and again: Spencer Hastings. Spencer is all class and maybe a little sass. She’s got the brains, the looks, and the flawless wardrobe. I am pretty she is the definition of “dress for success.” I just adore her unique sophisticated style that is all her own.

For this outfit, inspired by the lovely Ms. Hastings, I decided to go for a very neutral, put-together look. I’m wearing a lovely black overall dress I picked up from H&M, a thrifted beige sweater underneath, and my black Liz Claiborne boots paired with some knee high socks to add a little preppiness. For accessories, I decided to keep it simple and went with my favorite wishbone necklace also from H&M.

So there you have it, sometimes Netflix can be helpful – when it comes to wardrobe decisions at least.

So no one told ya life was gonna be this wayyyyyy *clap, clap, clap, clap* I know. I’m the worst. But I couldn’t resist.

Friends is a show that not only shaped my sense of humor and my perspective on love and friendship, but my style as well. I constantly try to channel Rachel Green, and her style in the first couple seasons of Friends is all kinds of goals. It’s 90’s chic in a way that’s laid back and undone. She always looks fabulous, yet effortless, aka what I strive for on a daily basis.

For this outfit, I decided to go for a more “casual Rachel” look. I had to go with this pair of high waisted jeans from H&M. They’re super high waisted but loose around the ankle, giving off a cool 90’s vibe. I paired them with this sleeveless Bobbi T-shirt from Cloth & Crown. As you can see in the photo on the bottom right in the collage above, which I found on Pinterest, this is pretty similar to a gray tank Rachel has worn so #score. I tied it in the front because Rachel is notorious for knotting her tops, as well as wearing more cropped shirts, so I felt this worked well for channeling her style.

I also threw on a slouchy gray cardigan from J.Crew, since Rachel is all about simple layering pieces, and added my white Converse sneakers and a pair of small hoops from Luca and Grae for some extra 90’s flair. I absolutely love taking inspiration from those I admire, whether they are real or fictional. It’s a fun challenge and a great way to freshen up your own personal style.

I chose the one and only, Serena van der Woodsen aka Blake Lively, as my style icon. Not simply is she perfection in general but her style is everything I long for. Whether she is glammed up in an extravagant ball gown, wearing the Constance school uniform or the few and far between casual outfit, she has such grace and confidence with herself.

Now, I’m not sure if this photo is from the set of Gossip Girl or a paparazzi shot of Blake but either way, I’m a fan. The outfit I chose to recreate is a classic spring and summer look. A simple chiffon navy blue dress that blows in the wind just enough to be whimsical but not too short, paired with a tan heel with floral inspired cutouts as the detail.

For accessories I am wearing gold hoops and a simple long gold necklace with a pearly-white pendant to compliment the earrings. Like paired with her outfit, I’m carrying a light greyish-beige colored purse with similar cutouts to the shoes. Serena often has her hair half up half down; so I went with straight hair, a little pulled back, with a few pieces pulled out in front. She pretty much always has minimal makeup so I just did my typical make up routine with a nude lip that she often rocks throughout the series.

When you take Sutton Foster, Broadway icon and dress her head to toe in the stylings of Patricia Field, celebrated costume designer behind Sex and the City, what do you get? You get Liza Miller from TV Land’s addicting show Younger. Both Foster and Liza are in their forties, but the premise of Younger revolves around a forty-year-old woman pretending to twenty six so she can get back into the work force. Along the way she falls in love with a hottie with a body that’s half her age, befriends her co-worker, the epic Hillary Duff, and navigates her new job with highs and lows all the while dressed in some of the best outfits I have seen on TV. Patterns that should clash don’t, layering becomes an art form and is a classic example of how style can represent a generation.

For this outfit I decided to channel her layers and love of beanies and hopefully did Patricia Field proud. My floral grey dress is from Target and threw a plaid button-up from Urban Outfitters over it in order to create combine the feminine-casual street style Liza is known for. My green faux blazer is from Forever 21 and my grey beanie is from H&M, and finally finished the look off with my black booties from TJ Maxx. The whole look screams “Liza” to me and honestly if you check out the visual aids I think you will feel the same way.
