How I Style My Short Hair

By Aline Dufflocq Williams

Hair is the one part of our physical appearances, besides wardrobe, that we can change at any point, in any way we like. It has become a key part in defining a “look” and allows us to express ourselves and our identity in a variety of colors, lengths and textures. For me, I didn’t truly feel like myself until I cut my hair and returned to my natural hair color. It is still, by far, one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I’ve also been thrilled to see the short hair trend sweeping the world. When I was thinking about cutting my hair, I looked up so many videos and posts about styling short hair. And now post-haircut have decided to throw my voice into the throng.

STEP ONE: PREP-WORK

Any good hairstyle requires the right texture. And personally I have found the use of Not-Your-Mothers Sea Salt Spray really useful. It gives my hair the right kind of grit and gets it ready for styling. When it’s still wet I spritz in heavy doses of the spray all throughout my hair. Then I blow dry it until it’s no longer damp, even the roots at the nape of my neck. My hair ends of feeling workable yet soft. Then I spray it thoroughly with It’s a 10, which works as a heat protectant for the curling I go on to do.

STEP TWO: CURLING

I have a lot of hair even with the short haircut, so in order to curl it I have to pull half of it up in a hair-tie. From there I use my Conair curling wand and wrap around 1 inch thick strands of hair, alternatination directions, away from my face and towards my face. When I release the now curled strip of hair from the curling wand I hold it in the palm of my hand near my scalp until the curl has cooled slightly and then I release it. After the bottom layer is done I take out the hair-tie and repeat the same process the top layer.

STEP THREE: STYLING

Once all my hair has been curled I spray it all with my Suave Max Hold Hairspray. Once the hairspray has set I turn my head upside down and tease it until the curls have softened. I then take my “bangs” and brush them back into a half-up, half-down style and secure the pieces of hair with a hair-tie., and then I am done.
