Fall 2018

Summer Lovin’

The trendsetters are excited to start the semester with a summer themed shoot! Today we are reminiscing about our favorite pieces of clothing we collected over the summer and fell in love with.

The trendsetters are all posing on a grassy hill. There are clouds in the sky and the sun is setting behind them.

Danh

Danh is posing on a stairway with light blue railings in the background. She is wearing a floral light pink kimono, a white ruffle top, a pair of light blue ripped jeans, and black high heel booties.

it’s always fun to dress up for summer. This summer has  become one of my favorite seasons. Vacation time, icecream and a beautiful summer sunshine with anything to wear.

I love to either go extra or simple in summer but since I love to be extra for everything,  but I went with this simple look. And with an outfit is basic, it’s hard to stand out but sometimes i like to change it up and go for a simple look if I chose to. For this shoot I’ve decided to go extra, But what’s amazing with fashion is that you really get to express your style using different styles, accessories and makeup to show off who you are.

For my outfit this shoot I am wearing a cute white top with a floral cardigan and plain jeans all from forever21 and the boot heels was from H&M.

In summer I love to switch up my style but for this one I wanted to make it classy and and wear bright colors so it brings out the color in me. But lately I’ve been obsessed with jewelry so I decided to add a cute crystal choker I’ve got from icing.

For my makeup, I went all extra I’ve did   contouring to bring out my cheekbones, a warm gold/pink  eye shadow blend to bring out my dark brown eyes and also a matte color lipstick from Sephora.

Ashley

Ashley is standing on a bridge wearing a white tank tank top with a large red stripe across the front and two blue stripes on the top and bottom. This is accompanied by a light wash denim skirt and a pair of white sneakers.

This summer I was absolutely “Summer lovin’” my denim skirt! I haven’t had one in my wardrobe since elementary school, and it felt like a piece of me was missing from my closet. Finding this one at TJ Maxx for $7 just made me fall in love all over again!! If you saw me at any point this summer, odds are I was at the baseball fields wearing it paired with some sort of red, white, and blue accents.

Erin

It’s so good to be back! I hope you all had an amazing summer, I know mine was a blast. I’m here in Missoula year-round now, I moved into my own apartment and got to enjoy a Missoula Summer (shameless self-plug for my upcoming individual post 😉 ).

I cheated a little bit on the theme of this shoot because almost all of these items are new for me! I started working at Olive + Iron this summer, and I got bunches of cute new clothes. This lacy white tank and the snakeskin high tops are both from Olive + Iron, and I can’t stop wearing them (Bonus points if you can find out which previous Trendsetter wore this top for a shoot last year!). These shorts are from H&M, and they are the item I’m most excited about, I got them on sale for $6. You probably can’t tell, but there is a massive hole in the bottom of one of the pockets. I’ve lost my fair share of bobby pins because of this pocket, but it’s all been worth it, I’m totally in love with these shorts. I’ve always had such a hard time finding flowy shorts that actually fit me right, so I’m gonna call this a success!

Hi lovely UM students, welcome back to another semester in the most beautiful state! This year, I was fortunate enough to spend my summer traveling through the west coast and Europe, where there was no shortage of shopping (trust me!!). After all of my adventures around the globe, it is so difficult to choose my favorite piece that I picked up! But I know for sure one of my favorite pieces I acquired was the gorgeous black and white jacket I am wearing, which I bought in Munich, Germany at New Yorker. Now I know it is odd to buy a jacket in summer, but Fall has always been my favorite season and I just couldn’t wait for the apple cider, pumpkin patches, and cozy days. (I always seem to be dreaming of this season…) This jacket is the perfect blend of a simple but staple piece while still looking dressed up in the colder months when all you want to do is bundle up in an oversized sweater. Staple pieces are key for my wardrobe. The black and white pattern pairs well with Fall colors like burnt orange, yellow, burgundy, brown, etc. and will compliment with beautiful Montana and all of its changing leaves and chilly days. Sending you all happy thoughts and well wishes this semester!

Summer is mostly everyone’s favorite season, you got the cold drinks, the 100 degrees weather, the BBQ and be on a great 3 month vacation in different areas.

My summer has been my favorite season and so far it has been great It’s been filled with camping, walkboarding, fishing but my favorite has been jet skiing. Also going to the fair with friends and light up the fireworks during the Fourth of July, and just in general it is a 3 months stress free.

During summer I would normally wear something either dresses, short, or just wear my swimsuits, but most of the time I would like to either dress up or wear something casual like my red shirt from Victoria secret and my white pants from Hollister that are ripped knees jeans. To top it all off I wore my black sperrys that you could wear on boat for the summer or just casually wear it during camping. I picked this particular favorite summer outfit because of the vibrant colors it gives during the summer and it wouldn’t keep you hot because it’s a nice flowy long sleeve shirt that way I wouldn’t sweat much.

Dina

Dina is posing in front of an orange storefront. She is wearing a white t-shirt tucked into a pair of mid-cut denim jeans. She is also carrying a crossbody tan bag.

Outfits and style can be changes over the season. In cold weather we wear sweaters, jacket and others warm clothes to make our body warm, but we also wants to keep it Look stylish.

On the other hand, when it’s come to summer time, we will we try to look as nice as we can because we have so many chance to wear cute outfits at this time. Whether we want wear skirt, tank top with short, Overalls, this time is the best ever to look classy. This summer have been spend my time in Portland and what I got to wear a lot is my overalls, shorts and simple shirt and t-shirt. Also I always bring different kind of bags, depence on what outfits I wear at that time to make it more stylish. I really love to wear short because it easy for me to move when I go around the city in Portland. As you can see in this picture, this is how I look when it’s come to summer time and this style that I picked from my Summer 2018. Oh yeah, I don’t really spend much money to buy my outfits. Most of my Outfits over the summer are from H&M, Forever 21 and Thrifted store. For this shoot, both my Shirt and Shorts I got from GoodWill Missoula. They are just so cheap and easy to wear on Summer time. For my shoes they are from Rue 21 Missoula as well. Last one is my favorite Waist Bag, I got from Ross. Isn’t it cute? anyways, I really love this style.

Madison

Madison looking up at the camera. She is on a blue metal stairway wearing a white graphic tee and a neon yellow zip up skirt.

I don’t know about you guys but I am NOT ready for this summer to end, all my cute clothes need the warmth! I spent this summer in my hometown, Seattle, and that means my summer was filled with shopping (went pretty much every day no joke). So of course, I couldn’t just pick one favorite piece from this summer and luckily my favorite items just so happened to go together and be one of my favorite looks. That being said a graphic tee and some sort of fun pant is my go to! This graphic tee is from Zara, it says “sometimes young minds overflow” …kind of relatable? The bold colors on top of a simple tee make this shirt go with just about anything, by far my most complimented piece in my closet from this summer.

Moving on, can we talk about this skirt?! I picked up this goodie in the sale section at Urban Outfitters in San Diego. Anyone that knows me knows that yellow is my favorite color and has been a trendy color for a while now. Not only is the color amazing but I love the zipper in the front which gives it a little edge

Last but not least these shoes, I found them at buffalo exchange (my go to store in Seattle) for only $30! And they’re originally from All Saints, and for anyone that does know what that is it is pricey. Platform shoes are my favorite kind of shoe these days, they bring a little more character to a basic sneaker without going to overboard.

Well there you have it, all my favorite summer pieces in one outfit. Sad to see the sunshine go but excited for all the new Fall finds!

Teya

Teya is sitting on a picnic table. She is wearing a red crewneck sweatshirt, short denim jeans, and white sneakers.

This summer, I was obsessed with lots of 90’s inspired looks. With this in mind, my favorite item that I picked up are a perfect pair of vintage shorts. I thrifted them from Divine Trash, which is a rare win for me, since I am the worst at thrift shopping. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wear them everyday… They went with anything, I especially loved wearing my all white Air Force 1’s with them! If you have trouble thrift shopping, I recommend going on a day that you have lots of time and patience.  Sometimes it takes a hot minute to find your thrifted treasure, but it’s always so worth it!

Jamie

Jamie spinnin in the sunset. She is wearing a pair of floral shorts and a white crewneck sweater. The background is green because of the trees and the grass.

I chose these shorts because they are different from anything else I own. I was drawn to the pastel, floral pattern because it looked very vintage and beautiful. I found these in the vintage section at Betty’s Divine for like $8 and thought they would be the perfect item to add to my summer clothes.

Claire

Claire is on the sidewalk, she is wearing a long floral cream back with a lace up back. Her shoes are a burgundy color.

In general, summer tends to be my least favorite part of the year. I’m far away from friends, the heat makes me want to die, and work is exhausting. However, this summer I was on a mission to not let this stop me on my trail to self discovery. I have been doing quite a bit of thinking in regards to eco friendly and sustainable fashion. Although most of my wardrobe is thrifted, I am on occasion a person who grabs cheap stuff here and there from large companies.

This summer I was focused on the idea of buying a couple of pieces that I LOVE instead of buying a bunch of cute pieces I will give away come next summer. While doing my research I found a website called Reformation that is an eco friendly and sustainable source of fashion. Many of the products are made out of deadstock or vintage fabrics, and although they can be pricey I like to consider pieces like this as an investment. This is where the dress I’m wearing is from.

It encompases the bright and sunny part of the year while also allowing a little splash of the 90’s in with the Gwyneth Paltrow circa red carpet cut of the dress. I can just picture myself sipping ice tea on my porch before my date with Brad Pitt while wearing this dress. I decided to pair this dress with a simple wishbone necklace my mother gave me years ago. My finishing touches were my cherry red vegan Doc Martens in the oxford style. I accompanied this with a blushy and dewy makeup look and was ready to go. The dress, by far, was my favorite piece of clothing I picked up over the summer.

Savanah

Savanah smiling and looking at the camera. She is wearing a floral top, a necklace, and Levi's jeans.

It’s fun to wear a cute floral dress or a skirt on a hot Summer day but quite frankly it just isn’t practical because if you’re anything like me Summer is playtime, and the last thing you want is a cute outfit excluding you from jumping on the back of a moped or fearlessly strolling downtown on a windy afternoon. That is why I always aim to incorporate practicality into my OOTD’s.

This summer I lived for anything denim. My go-to, however, were these denim high-waisted Levi’s paired with a crop-top or a bodysuit. I thrifted these Levi’s two summers back at a local second-hand store, and since have paired them in a series of combinations from dressing them up to dressing them down. I usually cuff the bottoms in order to add some dimension to the straight leg which can be quite plain at times especially if you are aiming for a dressier look. As for a top, I almost always will opt for a form fitting/flattering blouse that will contrast the looseness of the jeans. A pair of heels or flats create length and add a sense of command to the final look. I am wearing a chunky pair of brown Dansko heels, they are so comfortable and easy to walk in.

This outfit is perfect for a night when you want to look effortlessly cute and trendy, but don’t want to worry about the wind blowing your skirt up or an outfit change in the case that your night turns a little more adventurous.

Summer 2018

A Pinterest Inspired Shoot

In celebration of the last day of summer, we’d like to post a shoot we have been saving since the very first week of summer. As many of you probably know, we are quite the fans of Pinterest here at Trendsetters at the U. So of course we had to do an entire shoot inspired by posts we’ve seen on our favorite app!

If I am being honest, I have my entire life planned out on Pinterest. From what my future house will look like to meals I can cook in my InstantPot (which I don’t even have). The amount of time that I have invested into this social media platform is a bit embarrassing but it is also one of my favorite things to do when I’m bored. As far as pinning clothing, I get my inspiration from my What To Wear board all the time. Today is no exception as I put together a few Pins to throw together my look today. My seriously can’t do anything without a good jean jacket. I got this one online while shopping in my Micro Economics class last Spring. It’s from the brand Mind Code and I really like the lighter wash, the length, and the distressing that this jacket brings to my closet. My dress is from Goodwill but originally from Old Navy, I believe. I was immediately drawn to this sun dress because it will be so perfect for the spring and summer. I am in love with the detailing on the top of the dress too. I recently picked up these shoes from Target and they were even on sale for less than $10! I love the style and they are pretty comfortable. The scarf in my hair is from Madewell and I am not evening kidding when I tell you this…YOU HAVE TO GET THIS! I seriously wear it a million ways and I always seem to get compliments on it. I often wear it around my neck, in my hair, and I most of the time tie it around my bag (which is also from Madewell). Thanks Pinterest for another outfit inspiration, now only if it was warm enough to wear this one.

Hannah

As a little girl, I always loved playing princess, so when lace dresses – especially pink lace dresses – started appearing on my Pinterest feed, I knew it was a trend I had to jump on. The denim jacket is the perfect match for a look that allows me to channel my inner princess without crossing into Glinda the Good Witch territory – mine is from Jay Jays, and I’ve decorated it with pins collected on my travels. My look is altered for the unpredictable Montana spring, with tights and my favorite boots from Rubi shoes. The dress itself I picked up at the Trendsetters fall pop-up shop. I thrifted the bag and added a pink pom-pom decoration from Kmart.

I am pretty sure that the advent of Pinterest is what truly pushed me to strive for my full potential. I love all things pinterest, from cute clothing to hair advice to tasty recipes, I am here for all of it. I think my personal style is really heavily based in Pinterest style, but I had no idea how much until this shoot.

I was looking for some inspiration for this shoot when I found a post with the exact same clothing that I had, so recreating the outfit was super easy. I am so obsessed with floral patterns, and I love that long flowy skirts are so fashionable right now. I own a few, but just a week or so ago I bought this green one from target, The pattern is so bold, but also really feminine, and I am in love with it. My top is actually a dress that I layered with the skirt. If you know me, you know that I absolutely love pink, so of course I had to incorporate some into this outfit. The whole outfit is so summery and I’m getting super pumped to be out of school and in the sun, as I’m sure all of us are!

I remember when I was a sophomore in high school and got my first Pinterest account. Man, I’ve wasted a lot of time on that site! I know that Pinterest isn’t as popular as it used to be, what with Instagram adding their “saved” features. But I still find a lot of inspiration from Pinterest for everything from what to make for dinner to how to style my graduation pictures. Lately I realized I’ve been pinning lots of high waisted jeans and bright airy colors. I guess you could say I’m ready for this dreary Montana “spring” to end and make way for sunshine and blue skies. In my denim post, I mention how hard it is to find a good pair of jeans. Well, I think I’ve finally done it. I’ve been casually on the hunt for a great pair of high waisted straight leg jeans for the past few months and I tried on a few while shopping in Bozeman a few weeks ago. When I tried on these Levi’s wedgie fit jeans I was in love. I couldn’t breath (100% cotton), but it was exactly the look I was searching for. So when I started scrolling through my saved pins, it was obvious what I needed to wear for this shoot. To keep the light and airy esthetic that I’d been dreaming about on my Pinterest, I paired my new jeans with a white lace tank top and long necklace both from Olive+Iron and tan fake converses from Target. As a prop for this shoot, I brought a pom pom basket tote that my mom got me from World Market for Easter this year.

Pinterest is just like any others social media platform that we can upload photos and see others people photos. Not only photos, but also we can get some good ideas for room decorations, good quotes of the day, recipes, or even ideas for outfits. Today, I used Pinterest the most to get ideas for my outfit and look at some quotes. My idea for this photo shoot is “Bridge with Balloons”  which is just walking with balloons on the bridge.  I got 2 pictures for inspiration which are ‘Lock Bridge Paris with Balloons’ and “ Women Holding Balloon in Golden Bridge, San Francisco.” I choose these two picture because one, Paris is one my dream city that I really want to visit one day and I really want to take a picture in this place so badly. We have a beautiful bridge with locks in Missoula, and I’m just on it pretending that I am in Paris.

Last but not least is my outfit, I got my simple dress from H&M and my heels wedges are from Rue21. For balloons, I got them from Target.

I also want to say thank you to my roommate Ilse Abisay who  spent her time to helped me get these balloons and get ready for the shoot.

So yeah guys, if you want some good ideas for your outfits and some fun things , go check out Pinterest now and hopefully you all can find something that inspires you.

Have a wonderful day everyone.
