Fall brings out the best in fashion. And just like last year, we wanted to spotlight men’s fashion during one of our favorite seasons. We gathered up some of UM’s finest fashionistos to provide some fall fashion advice and inspiration for the guys.
When it comes to picking out pants for the Fall, take some cues from the season and grab a pair of camel, khaki or good old brown pants based off of the first leaf that falls from a tree as you look out your window. My favorite base color for pants right now is definitely camel. It’s a color loud enough to keep the neon-loving kid inside of me happy while remaining neutral enough to be a solid base for a variety of outfits. If you get the color just right as you stroll through the fallen leaves you might even look like a disembodied torso.
A darker color block shirt can bring a nice subtle contrast to your “Hey! Where did my legs go?” camel pants at this point. I’m a personal fan of long sleeved collared shirts, but a similar style hoodie or t-shirt can have the same effect. If you want to go the extra mile and enjoy being asked “Is that a shirt or a jacket?” look for a shirt that substitutes the classic button up style for a zipper.
What better time of year to go sloshing through puddles or jumping in piles of leaves than the Fall. To make sure your feet keep dry you’ve got to strap yourself up in a nice pair of boots. You can’t go wrong with a classic brown or black, but don’t be afraid to let your personality come through a little when picking out your footwear. There are nice waterproofing sealants that you can get for a variety of boot materials to keep you looking sharp throughout the season. If you do it right, you won’t ever want spring to come again.
FALL IS FINALLY HERE! Easily my favorite season, not too cold, not too warm. My wardrobe is literally only fall clothes and it’s pretty basic. Of course I’m going to pull out my light knit gray sweater and it’s one of my favorites because of the little zipper detail down the seams on both side. I got this from the Brooklyn Calling collection at Aeropostale and have been obsessed ever since.
For bottoms, I stayed pretty basic and threw on my black skinny jeans, one of the many pairs I own. As I always say, you can never own too many pairs!
For shoes, since it’s fall and the weather might be a little wet, I didn’t want to wear my nicer boots so I decided to go with my trusty pair of combat boots. You may not be able to tell, but just the day before they were covered in mud thanks to a corn maze, just one of the many fall activities that I’ll be wearing them to.
Finally, I grabbed my leather jacket because it’s slowly getting colder and a basic sweater just might not cut it. I’ll definitely be wearing this plenty through fall and even into winter.
As a homegrown Pacific Northwest boy, I was made for sweater weather. Autumn gives us the perfect opportunity to drape ourselves in soft fabrics and cozy up under warm blankets or blanket scarves. I bought this scarf because of the size, as I’m a pretty tall dude and want something of scale, but also for the neutral tones.
This gray knit is one of my favorites because of the way it fits my arms; rarely does a sweater show off a bicep well. My standard staple no matter what month is a pair of black slim fit denim and I’m usually wearing it with a dark boot of some kind, just like here. These shoes have had a good life and I’ll most likely be investing in a new pair soon. Where do I get them you ask? Unapologetically, everything I’m wearing (even down to my skivvies) is from H&M.
Fall is my favorite season. While I really like the sparkling sterility of winter, the fresh rejuvenation of spring and the torrid, dog days of summer, I LOVE the mystery and mildly tragic romance of fall. There is a mood in the air as the colors shift from summery greens to fiery reds and it fills me with a sense of brooding self-reflection. While it may not be fully conscious, I know this feeling impacts my choice in attire.
I put a lot of miles on my feet during a regular day, so it’s important to me that what I wear will be appropriate for any situation. A good pair of Levi’s is always a safe bet, especially when I’m not sure what the day will bring. Since there is a chill in the air, I like a black knit sweater from H&M which keeps me warm, but not TOO warm. I finish the basic outfit with my favorite shoes…a pair of Converse. The great thing about Converse is that you can dress them up OR down.
Fall fashion is all about the accessories that keep us warm. I start with a black Gucci scarf paired with a good old-fashioned hand-me-down scarf from my Dad. This scarf adds a little bit of color to my otherwise black-on-black ensemble. My long, black jacket is from Gap and is one of my favorite pieces to pull out when the seasons change.
Finally, I think it’s important to support my friends whenever I can. A friend of mine started a lifestyle brand called BETTER RUGGED, which, among other things, produces great hats. I think throwing on a hat is a great way to add a little bit of personal style to any outfit. Plus, there’s the added benefit that you can avoid messing with your hair in the morning, so I’m more than happy to wear the hat and show my support!
I’ll be honest, I’m busy and don’t always put a lot of thought into being fashion-forward. When I get dressed, I think about function first, then comfort, and finally, fashion. Don’t get me wrong, I like to look good and I want to express my personal style, but I’m a (broke) student and my style vision can’t quite match my reality…yet. So for me, the most important and stylish thing a person can do is dress for the demands of their day, while making sure that they feel great about how they look.
Autumn in Missoula is really something else. The trees that line the streets of Missoula around the University light up with orange and red and the walks by the river become a bit more chilly. The sunset seems brighter and the wind has more of a bite to it. I guess I really like Fall.
I like a slimmer, taller fit in my clothes. So, for this outfit, I started with my favorite flannel shirt (what is fall without a flannel?!) as well as some slimmer Free World jeans. I paired these with my favorite shoes – black and white Old Skool Vans. So far, fairly traditional look. However, the highlight of this outfit is certainly the open cardigan thing. I don’t even know what to call it! I acquired it from H&M and it is probably the most comfortable thing I wear. It has a very tall fit and can be worn open or overlapped on itself.
This is one of my go-to’s on a sunny autumn day—it keeps me cozy without all the layers. If it does seem chillier, I’ll throw on a base layer underneath it all. It has classic styling with a modern piece that draws eyes.
I like American brands. I got most of the clothes i’m wearing today in the U.S. People tend to be in dark colors in the fall, so I purposefully used light colors in today’s outfit!
This sherpa jacket keeps me warm on cold mornings in the fall.
Pants: Sleepy Jones
Sleepy Jones, which produces stylish pajamas, is one of my favorite brands; their clothes are always comfy.
Sunglasses: Warby Parker
Warby Parker is an innovative eyeglasses company. Their eyeglasses are super cool and it’s not expensive.
I like Stan Smith. It goes with the white T-shirt.
